Car Detailing vs
Car Wash

What's actually the difference — and which one does your car need?

By Dean — D83 Detailing

The short answer

A car wash removes surface dirt. Car detailing restores, corrects and protects your paintwork. They are not the same service — and confusing the two is one of the most common reasons cars end up with swirl-marked, dull paintwork over time.

What a car wash actually does

An automated car wash — the kind you drive through — uses spinning brushes or high-pressure water jets to remove mud, dust and loose grime from the surface. It takes 3–5 minutes and costs a few pounds.

The problem: automated brushes trap grit between passes and drag it across your paintwork, creating the fine circular scratches known as swirl marks. Over time, every automated car wash makes your paint worse.

A hand car wash (the kind run from a supermarket car park) is usually better than a machine but is still typically just a quick wash — shampoo, rinse, dry. No decontamination, no protection, no correction.

What car detailing actually does

Professional car detailing is a multi-stage process that goes far beyond washing. Depending on the package, it involves:

  • Pre-wash & snow foam — Loosening contamination before any contact with the paintwork — preventing scratches during the main wash.
  • Two-bucket hand wash — A methodical wash using separate rinse and wash buckets to minimise the risk of dragging grit across the paint.
  • Iron fallout & tar removal — Chemical decontamination that removes bonded brake dust, iron particles and road tar that washing alone cannot shift.
  • Clay bar treatment — A clay bar is worked across the surface to remove embedded contamination, leaving the paint slick and smooth.
  • Machine polishing (if required) — Removes swirl marks, fine scratches, water spots and oxidation using machine polishers and cutting compounds.
  • Protection application — Wax, sealant or ceramic coating applied to protect the paintwork and maintain the results.

Which one does your car need?

If your car is already protected and just needs a regular clean — a Regular Refresh is all you need. This keeps the protection topped up and the paintwork looking its best.

If your car has visible swirl marks, looks dull or flat — you need paint correction. This is the only way to remove those marks, and no amount of washing will fix them.

If your car has never been properly protected — a Protect Detail (decontamination + ceramic coating) will transform how it looks, how easy it is to keep clean and how well the paint holds up over the coming years.

The honest summary

Automated car washes are convenient but damage paintwork over time. Professional car detailing corrects, protects and preserves your car — it's the difference between a clean car and a properly maintained one.
