How Long Does Ceramic
Coating Last?

The honest answer — and what actually affects how long your coating will protect your car.

By Dean — D83 Detailing

The direct answer

A professionally applied ceramic coating lasts between 2 and 10 years depending on the product tier and how well it's maintained. Consumer-grade spray coatings bought online typically last 6–12 months. There is a significant difference in chemical hardness and bonding strength between entry-level and professional coatings.

What makes a coating fail early?

  • Automated car washes — Spinning brushes physically abrade the coating, reducing its thickness and hydrophobic properties far faster than hand washing.
  • Harsh chemicals — Non-pH-neutral shampoos, degreasers and traffic film removers degrade the coating's chemical bond. Always use pH-neutral car shampoo.
  • Bird droppings left to sit — Bird waste is highly acidic. Left for more than a few hours in warm weather, it etches into the coating — and eventually through it.
  • Tree sap — Like bird droppings, tree sap is acidic and sticky. Remove it promptly with a dedicated sap remover.
  • Infrequent washing — Contaminants build up and begin to chemically attack the coating. Regular washing (every 2–3 weeks) significantly extends coating life.

How to maintain a ceramic coating

  • Wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo every 2–3 weeks
  • Never use an automatic car wash
  • Remove bird droppings and tree sap immediately
  • Apply a ceramic coating maintenance spray every 3–6 months
  • Use a soft microfibre wash mitt — never a sponge
  • Rinse the car thoroughly before any contact wash
